The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction flipped the image and did not reproduce the colors as Bok wished. If you want to go short I'd recommend A Rose for Ecclesiastes - epic tale of an obsessed linguist seeking to communicate with the remaining handful of an alien race. I always cry at the end of Flowers for Algernon and I also cried at the end of Zelazny's A Rose For Ecclesiastes the first time I read it.
